According to David Koeing, The US government is punishing American Airlines with a $4.1 million fine for keeping passengers on board planes during long ground delays.

The fine is the largest of its kind since rules were introduced a decade ago.

American Airlines must pay half of the fine within 30 days, but the government has given the airline credit for the other half, which it paid to delayed passengers.

The US Department of Transportation found that American Airlines kept 43 domestic flights on the ground for at least three hours without allowing passengers to leave between 2018 and 2021.

The airline has said it seeks to avoid lengthy ground delays and has provided compensation to delayed passengers.

Between 2018 and 2021, 43 domestic American flights violated the Transportation Department’s rules by keeping passengers on board for lengthy periods without allowing them to deplane.

The airline did not provide food or water to customers during the delays.

American Airlines has apologized to affected customers.
